There was a time, not all that long ago that I used to write blogs on a regular basis. Those blogs would run the full spectrum from business development to technical how-tos. A lot of writing around; working with startups, business development, giving first, creating a development sandbox, how to run a startup program, developer advocacy, technical posts on how to operate within Infrastructure as a Service, working with linux, and the basics of Python. Changing roles over the years I really just fell out of the habit of writing blogs. A habit I would really like to change.
On this #901 #Memphis Day I was motivated to write something about one of my heroes, someone I look up to for a lot of reasons. With that in mind I created this site and these pages today. Both to kick start my blogging habits and to recognize one of the best people I know in the Entrepreneur world, Eric Mathews @ECMathews. This is symbolic for two main reasons. First, this is #901 Day in #Memphis, and second, it marks the anniversary of Eric Mathews making the shift to being an entrepreneur. I could be wrong here, but I believe it’s 16 years.
It takes a very special person to make a life shift the way Eric did. It wasn’t to try to get rich quick or to make a huge name for himself. Knowing Eric makes you want to laugh at those ideas. No, Eric made these changes to serve others, serve his community, and serve Memphis. A shift and a dedication to serve takes a giant leap of faith that I admire. It was a big milestone and leap in his life, something that he did out of his value for service and helping others feel like they belong possibly sacrificing a lot for the chance at helping others. You can put a lot at risk; your health, your sanity, your money, and your livelihood just to name a few.
Fortunately, none of those things were ever really at risk. Eric made the jump from what looks to me almost effortlessly. While I would never diminish his struggles, trials, or efforts, he really just made it looks easy. Surprisingly I haven’t really known Eric for as long as it feels. He feels like family and I’ve known him for decades. In reality, it’s been less than 10 years, but I’ve been a fan the entire time. Let’s take a look at some of the things that makes him… well, him.
Before I go any further, I will admit, I shamelessly stole the following from his LinkedIn — Over 16 years ago, Eric Mathews started and built the early stage tech startup ecosystem in Memphis, Tennessee, which included starting one of the first 100 startup accelerators to operate in the world. His work has since expanded to support a cadre of digital and economic advancement initiatives in Memphis, North America, beyond. In 2011, he co-founded Start Co., an internationally recognized venture architect firm where he serves as CEO. Start Co., in addition to building new startups, provides the processes for corporations, governments, universities, and other organizations to build data and technology solutions, new business models, and civic innovations that leverage the power of digital cities, innovative talent, venture development expertise, investment capital, and global connectivity. In the Memphis area, Start Co. has materially supported over 300 entrepreneurs and their businesses, several Fortune 500 & 1000 companies, and other impact organizations. That’s not to mention his work with underprivileged and underserved communities. His support of more than 1000 black founders through the National Black MBA, and his board position with the GAN allows him to support countless startups.
Some time ago Eric asked me what his super power is. He used the words “Unique Ability” I choose “Super Power” and here were my very sincere words: “Eric is very intentional at connecting the dots. But it goes quite a bit deeper than that. Eric can, at the drop of a hat, recite the elevator pitch of another company, and probably a better version of it. He can quickly understand and list what a business is struggling with and then connect the dots with who can help them address that struggle. Further, he can do that with the struggles he sees them having, the struggles they see themselves having, and the struggles Eric sees them facing in the near future. I love the fact that Eric offers unsolicited advice. No need for someone to ask him what he thinks or for help; he volunteers knowledge and expertise without effort. Sometimes people have a hard time asking for help; Eric removes that barrier and invites an open conversation. Any time that Eric can get a few hours with someone, he provides incredibly powerful advice to grow their companies or help them experience their own personal growth.”
In closing I would like to say very simply; Eric, you make the world and Memphis a better place. I am honored to call you a close friend and anyone that has the fortune to interact with you will be better for it. Keep that advice coming, keep doing everything you do, and the rest of us will be here if you need us. Happy Anniverary on an incredibly great decision, and happy #901 Day in #Memphis
Kelley, wow! What better a day than #901Day to kick start your blogging again – it’s wonderful to read your kind words towards Eric. Thank you for sharing the “Super Power” you see in Eric, I’m grateful for the impact that his “Super Power” brings to the world every day.
